Astragalus

Astragalus - where to start -  I will do a summary for you, if you require actual research visit pubmed.
The actions of astragalus - Immune enhancing, tonic, adaptogenic, cardiotonic, diuretic, hypotensive, antioxidant.
Therapeutic uses - prevention of infection, impaired immunity
Chronic bacterial or viral infections especially if combined with debility and spontaneous sweating, such as HIV infection.  Chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic autoimmune diseases, especially nephritis, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, not advisable in acute infections.
 
Contra indications, cautions, adverse effects and herb drug interactions - none if taken within the recommended dosage range.

impaired immunity- common cold - results show it decreased the severity and shortened the duration of illness.
As an adjunct in the treatment of cancer.  Combined treatment of traditional Chinese herbs raised the survival rates in patients with small cell lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy.
Leucopenia - average white blood cell counts rose significantly in two groups of patients with leucopenia after treatment with concentrated astragalus preparations.
Chronic viral hepatitis. elevated serum GPT levels returned to normal after 1 to 2 months.
In a comparative trial, 92 patients suffering from ischaemic heart disease were treated with astragalus, dan shen or the antianginal drug nifedipine.  Results were superior for the Astragalus-treated group, as demonstrated by marked relief from angina pectoris and improvement in several objective clinical parameters.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 507 elderly people, oral administration of Astragalus in combination with Polygonum multiflorum and Dan shen demonstrated significant antiageing effects.
In two double-blind clinical trials topical application of Astragalus combined with interferon was beneficial for treatment of chronic cervicitis associated with viral infection.
Pharmacological studies suggest that Astragalus has potential benefit in the following applications, but further research is required.

Protection against oxidative damage.
